My son is almost 13mo and we've been to the ENT once just so we're ready if we need to start visiting. My husband did as a child "often" but hasn't needed it more than once or twice since completing high school. He has bent a paper clip, of all things, into its long shape so that it looks like an 8. He scrapes his canals daily right after a bath, then uses q-tips for the rest.

I wouldn't recommend that on a child, though. For my son, we just use q-tips. I put them in hald the length of the cotton and just twirl it. Every couple months we use a baby oil flush. I also have invested in a "Dr. Mom" otoscope - I bought it on Ebay for $20 US or so, and my pediatrician showed me how to look so you can see the whole canal. I probably use it every 2 weeks or so.

Ichthyosis-en-Confetti Type 2
